WHAT MAKES A SONG POPULAR?
Analyzing Spotify Trends from 2010-2019
Music is everywhere. Whether you’re jamming out to your own playlist, scrolling through social media, or entering a cafe where they’re playing their own mix, the latest and most popular tunes are always floating around. As music listeners ourselves, we then wondered: what makes a song popular? As trends come and go within music, we wanted to see how trends for popular songs have changed as well. To see how trends have changed within the past decade, we looked at the top 100 streamed songs every year and their associated attributes through Spotify database, one of the largest music streaming platforms around the world.
Which genres of music have been the most popular during the past decade?
To see broadly what types of music have been popular over time, we can first look at the breakdown of the most popular genres of the top songs from 2010-2019.

What characteristics make a song popular?
So far, we have found that pop tends to be popular with the general listening population. But what is it exactly about pop that listeners enjoy so much? To understand this, we can break down several attributes of each year's top song from 2010-2019, specifically the valence, energy, and danceability.

Valence, Energy, and Danceability of Each Year's Most Popular Song from 2010-2019

After looking at valence, energy, and danceability of the top songs of each year, we can now look at all the attributes of the most popular 10 songs over the past decade. From this chart, we can see that popular songs not only have high valence, energy, and danceability, but also high loudness and accousticness, moderate bpm and duration, and low speechiness.
So what makes a song popular in the current world?
By looking at the different traits of the most popular songs over the past decade, we can confidently say that the most popular songs have tended to be (dance) pop songs released by pop artists. These songs tended to have attributes of high valence, energy, danceability, loudness, and accousticness, attributes of moderate bpm and duration, and attributes of low speechiness and likelihood of live recording. As listeners, we predict that similar trends will persist in the future, so music listeners should expect to hear such songs.
